README for GlueX Tutorial Jan. 7, 2011 1/ 4/2011 DL Updated 12/17/2010 DL This file is maintained in SVN here: https://halldsvn.jlab.org/repos/trunk/home/davidl/Tutorial2011/README If you are reading this file after double-clicking it from the Desktop on the XUbuntu10.10 VM distributed at the tutorial, then note that the Desktop file is just a symlink pointing to the file: /home/guest/Tutorial2011/README. References to directories in the text below are relative to that directory on the VM. This directory contains files for the GlueX Software Tutorial scheduled to take place on Jan. 7th, 2011 at Christopher Newport University. The tutorial is arranged as a series of lectures with "hands-on" sessions interspersed between. The idea is for participants to use their own laptops to go through exercises during the hands-on sessions. The exercises are designed to provide them with experience running the simple examples on a working system while also giving them access to the experts who will be in the room. Each session has it's own directory with a README file detailing the steps that should be performed. The tutorial was deisgned to be run on a virtual machine that has the GlueX software (along with all of its dependancies) pre-installed. This should allow participants to focus on how to run the software as opposed to spending a lot of time compiling and installing. Though not required for the tutorial, it may be convenient to copy some files between the virtual machine and the host. The easiest way to do this is through Virtual Box's sharing mechanism. One can access this through the "Shared Folders..." item of the Devices menu (at least that's where it is on Mac OS X). If you specify a directory on the host machine and give it the name "host", then you can mount it this way: sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000,gid=1000 host /home/guest/host The host directory will then be available in ~/host for reading and writing from the guest OS.
